Elementary school, 1989. My teacher has a surprise for us. “What is it, what is it?” we ask. He tells us to be patient; he’ll reveal it later in the afternoon, he says. When it’s time, he disappears for a bit, then returns with a VHS tape in his hand. A movie! Oh man. We all follow him to the recreation room, excited. There, a TV set awaits us. It’s an old model, it looks as if it has been there since the early 1970s. “Now watch,” the teacher says, as he inserts the tape.

The Harlem Globetrotters. Highlights. Two hours long. Everyone goes crazy and enjoys it, but I want to go home.
